TED Talks: Charles Moore: Seas of plastic
Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles, whales, and other marine mammals, and more than 1 million seabirds die each year from ocean pollution and ingestion or entanglement in marine debris. Marine debris is manmade waste that is directly or indirectly disposed of in oceans, rivers, and other waterways.

10 WAYS FOR KIDS TO PLAY IN AMERICA'S NATIONAL PARKS
Pledge to never, ever litter.
Not even if I think my litter is biodegradable; not even if there isn't a trash can handy.
Not even if nobody's watching, or my litter is something really, really small.

Of every six water bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling bin. The rest are sent to landfills. Or, even worse, they end up as trash on the land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate.

Millions of tons of trash end up in our nation’s rivers and streams every year from litter on the ground and illegal dump sites. Trash is more than just an eyesore; it can contaminate your drinking water and threaten the lives of all who depend on it.

Recycling breaks down the package and turns it into something else. A recycled plastic container can be turned into a new package, a lawn chair, a carpet, or a comb. A recycled cardboard box can be turned into another carton, newspapers, shoe boxes, or egg cartons. A recycled glass bottle can be turned into new bottles, countertops, beads or bricks. Recycling and re-using materials also saves energy. The amount of energy saved by recycling a single plastic water bottle instead of creating a new one could power a 60-watt light bulb for 6 hours.
